Meet our Members

Heather

I have been attending since 1996.  I have loved skiing since I was a kid, but being from NY I had only experienced the Vermont slopes.  With the airline club, I was able to ski the big resorts out west and what a difference!  Real powder!  I soon started to race for Northwest and that rekindled my competitive spirit.  I now race in the A division but still have a long way to go to catch the "fast" girls!  I really enjoy the parties, especially theme party night on Wednesdays.  I like to dance and soon after joining, realized that there are lots of cute, athletic, fun guys in the club too!  I'm looking forward to another great season and hope that Team Delta can hold on to our title as NAASF champions!

Scotty

My ski club friends call me Scotty. DSSC member since 1991. I grew up skiing but mostly at the smaller resorts throughout the Pacific Northwest.  The ski club gave us a reason (and the great group discounts) to expand our skiing to not only the best resorts in the U.S. but to many of the top European resorts as well. The group of lifelong friends I have made from airlines all over the world is priceless.  DSSC is now one of the largest ski and snowboard clubs in NAASF and we look forward to defending our team titles. Think snow!

Rob

I started skiing in my thirties. Late bloomer. When I first came to SLC, I heard about Delta Ski & Snowboard Club.  Since joining in 1999, I have made some of the greatest friendships, and been to some awesome resorts in N. America, as well as Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Sweden & Finland.  I've also become a much better skier. (Okay, I sound like a commercial!) But seriously, it's a blast! The parties are fun, the resorts are excellent, and the people are real friends. I've been V. President, & President of the club, and I'm currently a board member. Needless to say, joining the club is one of the best things I've ever done!  Hope to see you out there on the slopes!

Sarah

I came to my first ski week in 2005 at Steamboat, CO. I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into. I had heard that the parties were pretty wild, and I'd never raced before.  I had so much fun at my first ski week, that I've rarely missed one since.  I've made some great friends from many different airlines.  I also was able to improve my skiing considerably since joining the club.  The ski instruction that I received at the Copper Mountain Clinics has really been a big help.  I never thought I would be ski racing before I joined the club, but now I really get a kick out of racing.  And yes, we do have a lot of fun at the parties.

Schladming Recap PDF Print E-mail

Guten Tag everyone!

Just a few weeks ago, twelve members of your Delta Ski & Snowboard Club travelled to Schladming, Austria to participate in the World Airline Ski Championships. The event was one of the best in recent history with lots of great parties, challenging skiing, and the usual travel “adventures” that always seem to come with the Int’l ski week!

Some of us left a few days early to spend some “quality” time in Munich, getting “adjusted” to the time zone change. It turned out that the only thing we adjusted to was how strong the beer is in Germany! But, despite the Hofbrau House’s best efforts we made our train/bus to Schladming on Sunday morning, and joined up with the rest of the team, as well as some of our Alaska Air friends, arriving that day!

Sunday night we marched in the opening parade, through Schladming, ending up at the bottom of the World Cup run, where we were treated to free Gluvine (warm spice wine) and beer! There we watched a synchronized skiing demonstration before the Championship was declared open. Then we went next door where the Swedish cover band, The Balboas, proceeded to rock us late into the night!

Monday was a free day with skiing and night sledding on the mountain that some of us enjoyed, others…Ashley from Alaska, enjoyed a little too much by trying a little “off-piste” sledding that didn’t work out so wellL Fortunately she was not seriously hurt, and should recover from the sore back!

Tuesday was the GS competition, where the course was icy & challenging. Our own Katrena Garske completed the two runs for 33rd place. Not bad, when you consider she’s competing against the world! Others, myself & Scott Aldrich, were not able to finish the second run. Myself, due to an Atomic pre-release (#@*%!!!!), and Scotty, skiing on edgeless rental race skis……thanks Delta baggageL. That afternoon was the Men’s 15K X country race, where our retired Capt. & Team drummer, Chuck Hinz, raced his way to 24th place, behind his son, Jim (Alaska) in 15th!

Wednesday’s Slalom saw more treacherous conditions of ice & wind. Heather Patterson put together 2 solid runs for a 27th place finish. I managed to make it down both runs and even “looked like a ski racer” on my second run, according to my A-Team friendsJ Unfortunately, Scott’s bad luck continued, with a broken slalom pole & mistaken straddle (ask him about it, he loves to relive it!) Sally Martin, freshly recovered from her Birthday marathon of the previous 48 hours, was unable to finish the 2nd run, as was Katrena. Nevertheless, I was proud of your team’s efforts, from racing, to coat runs, to cheering, to getting out of bed by noon! Great work everyone!!

Wednesday night’s party was a blast. There were some misgivings about the theme, 1001 Arabian nights, but the 450+ attendees all came up with great costumes. The Balboas kicked #ss, and the Delta women looked absolutely beautiful. ;-)

Thursday was a recovery morning, followed by the big Fun Race in the afternoon. Your team of Sarah, Heather, Reed & Scott hung in there at the top of the race hill, waiting out numerous delays & false starts, while the rest of us partied and sampled food & drink from around the world. When they finally got to race, they performed admirably, though I don’t think the shot went down very smoothly for Heather!!! That night we capped the week off with the awards dinner, where Lufthansa took top honors, with home team Austrian Airlines coming in second, and neighbor Swiss Int’l showing up in 3rd.

Friday’s departure went VERY early & smoothly until the majority of the team arrived at MUC where the flight cancelled for the day, and the Deltoids along with friends from Southwest & Skywest banded together their nonrev survival skills & made it through the night to get home on Saturday!

All in all, apart from Heather & Scott’s ski bags, and a cancelled flight, it was a great week and the whole team did Delta proud! Next year’s venue will be a bit easier to get to, since it will be held at Crested Butte, CO! Not the adventure of Europe, but an awesome mountain, and the people and the parties will be great, and let’s face it…that’s why most of us go anyway!

This just in…

Mark your calendars for March 3-9, 2012

W.A.S.C. in Niseko, Japan!

Talk about an adventure!!

Skiya Later!
